Inge & Tony

See the transcript

At Stannah we’re in business to make life easier and more fulfilling for people. Whether that is getting goods from a basement to the shop floor, or helping people like Inge here, to get around her own home.

How would you say that the Stannah stairlift has changed your life?

Totally. Everybody is going to say that. I don’t know what else to say, Other than it looks as though it’s been there forever.

What made you think about having a stairlift in the first place?

Well really, with Inge going up the stairs on all fours it got to the stage where I was concerned that when she got to the top, she had to stand up and I was terrified she was going to fall backwards. I said we said “look, we’ve got to do this” and we both said “Look, we ought to go round to Stannah”.

Which we did and the reception there was just unbelievable. It really was, because we got as we say, it was a “cold call” in reverse, if you like. And they did us proud, they really did. They were excellent. A really excellent reception. Of course, coming from a sales background I was particularly impressed because I thought that’s the way I’d like to see it done, and it was. Absolutely.

Whyhy did you choose Stannah?

Well, in my case, it was purely the engineering side. It was so much better than anybody else. The quality as well, it comes across as being a very good product.

Pricing, interestingly enough, was a secondary consideration. The most important thing was safety for Inge and the fact that it was going to fit into the cottage here. A number of my friends have said, “But it fits in, Tony.” So neat. “So neat” is the word that they’ve used.

I think also that going to Stannah’s showroom and trying different ones and seeing them there. I think I needed to do that before I made a decision.

How was the experience with the Stannah engineers, I’m sure you would’ve loved that?

I did. It was stunning! I expected them to be here till at least the early hours of the evening. Instead of which, by lunch time, they’d finished!

And so efficient. Oh boy! The tidying up afterwards, those little things. I couldn’t believe it. It’s the attention to detail that makes all the difference, and it did they were super guys.

Of course, I ask the first question “How long have you been with Stannah?” It was a total of 46 years combined! So that tells a hell of a lot.

They also would’ve handed over the stairlift and explained how to use it?

Yes they did. It went smoothly. Lots of laughter and so forth, for the jokes. It was great.

When you used the stairlift that evening how did you feel?

Like I’d won the lottery pretty much. I don’t know how many times she went up and down. But it didn’t feel strange. I mean, it just felt so right. I mean after that, there was no stopping me. We’ve got our house back.

Yes, I’ve got a better husband as well now. I don’t have to ask him all the time for things. So I can do that all on my own, up and down.

And what would you say to anyone who is thinking about having a Stannah stairlift? Maybe putting the decision off. What would your advice be?

Don’t, but that’s easier said that done. I went through the process, and I’m sure everyone else does. I don’t need one, maybe next year, whatever.

It’ll come to a time, once you accept you can’t do what you always did, and you are going to need a stairlift, it’s easier after that. But you’ve got to get over that bridge, if you like. Because it’s not going to go away. And you really haven’t got a choice in the end.

So the trick is to, however hard, okay. I mean, the frustration I went through was unbelievable. I didn’t want to know, but I knew the time would come. Yes, absolutely.

I think also, that the people that are thinking about taking one, they should say right, upfront go for it. Because if anything should happen it’s not necessarily them that is going to suffer, it’s all the people around them who are going to suffer.

And that’s the key issue and they’ve got to think of that. It’s important to think of everybody around you, as well as yourself, to get it done.

At Stannah, we constantly assess our customers’ requirements and needs, as well as listening to their feedback so that we can continue to provide innovative solutions and engineer reliable products to make life easier for them in their own homes.

Any idea what you would’ve done if there no such thing as a stairlift?

I really do not know.

Mr & Mrs Pottinger’s Stairlift story

See the transcript

Mr Pottinger: The period between being very active and not being active was quite short actually.

Mrs Pottinger: We were more concerned that we [might] have to turn a room downstairs into a bedroom. Because no longer could we go upstairs.

Mr Pottinger: It’s something that you always put at the back of your mind because you’re not prepared to accept the fact that you’re never going to walk up the stairs again. I used to go up these stairs in 10 seconds flat at one time.

Mrs Pottinger: Very difficult. With his breathing, with his lungs being full of fluid and his heart condition. So I used to walk up the stairs behind him in case he fell down.

Mr Pottinger: The timing was perfect for me because I was running out of steam.

Mrs Pottinger: We had a discussion about it, and we decided to go for a Stannah chair lift. The representative came along, and he bought a sample of the chair. He fitted it for Derek to sit on and decided then that this would be no good for him.

Mr Pottinger: The representative said “we’ve got a new model coming out.” He went on to describe it in terms of semi-sitting onto the whole thing, where the seat is collapsible.

Mrs Pottinger: He then produced the Sadler and that we found with the perching position was very good for Derek – very comfortable and safe. So that’s how we decided on the Sadler.

Mr Pottinger: Comfort? It’s perfect. I couldn’t improve it in any way.

Mrs Pottinger: It certainly has changed Derek. Because he can go up and down at his own leisure. And certainly for me, because I don’t have to worry about him. I know he’s safe on it. We’re very pleased with it. We’re living again!

Sally and Barry’s Story

Sally: I think I wanted to enter because his health isn’t all that good really, his knees are quite bad and his hips are quite bad so it was just to give something that would improve his quality of life really.

Barry: Sally actually rang me to tell me about it and I was absolutely gobsmacked, I just couldn’t believe it. What a thing to have, marvellous!

Sally: It’s certainly improved his knees, he’d said you know, within a couple of days it made such a big difference he could go up and down and his knees felt a lot better than they have done in years.

Barry: I’m very grateful to Stannah Stairlifts, it has made a great difference to my life and I hope it will continue to do so. I can recommend anybody else who’s in a similar position to me that it will make a difference to your life.

Sally: Stannah were very professional from start to finish, really nice company to deal with, yeah absolutely fantastic, 100% recommended.

Adam’s Story

See the transcript

My name is Adam and I’m an ex-member of Her Majesty’s Forces, served for 17 years in the regular forces and left in 1997. And I was called up in 2003 for the subsequent war in Iraq.

When I was called up and went to Iraq I ended up with one of the infantry units there and we became the lead element into Iraq so we were heavily involved in the fighting. I was wounded in action on the night of the 22nd and 23rd of March when a Republican Guard deliberate counter attack was launched against us.

My life changed dramatically when I became disabled and until really that I received a stairlift to be able to use, I was a virtual prisoner in my own home. Particularly upstairs as coming downstairs is quite difficult, going upstairs is far worse. So when the stairlift arrived and I could start using that, life changed dramatically for me for the better and the quality of my life improved significantly.

I would certainly, without a shadow of a doubt, recommend Stannah Stairlifts to anybody with any debilitating injuries, no matter how they were caused or what they’ve been left with. Life has changed so much for the better since I’ve received my stairlift.

Martin and Sue’s Story

See the transcript

Martin: For 15 years I have been walking around on a bad knee. At that time I didn’t know any different so I used to struggle up the stairs.

Sue: I had to obtain two quotations, so I chose Stannah and another. I phoned Stannah and they booked an appointment. Well, Shaun phoned back and he was here within a week or so and then Shaun came back to do the measuring and what impressed me was he took so much care.

When the fitters came the rails were exactly to this house. It’s a precision job.

Martin: It took about 4 hours — that’s all. And I said, “Well, I’ll hoover up”. He said, “No, don’t bother, we carry our own hoover.” Very impressed.

He gave me a demonstration and I was, well, taken aback, especially when he showed me the remote control, I thought“Here we go”. I can be half way up the stairs or half way down the stairs. If I forget anything I just turn the handle the opposite way and off I go again.

Sue: If someone came to me for advice I would say, you know, without delay ring a reliable company and Stannah would be the top of my list.

Martin: I really could not believe I could get on there and to walk straight off onto a landing. I had never done that. That is super duper duper. I would recommend Stannah to anybody.

Daphne’s Story

See the transcript

Well, my partner told me there was a very pretty place to retire to and I came to see it and looked at horror and thought“I can’t buy this house because I can’t climb stairs”. I had lived since 1959 in bungalows and then I saw an advert I think, obviously, and I thought, “Yes, I can. I can have a Stannah stairlift”, which is exactly what I did.

And I still can’t climb stairs and I sail away up to bed at night and come down in the morning. I was able to buy this pretty little place which I’d fallen in love with.

I was very interested that Stannah, of course, is a family company. They didn’t force-sell the equipment, they gave me a choice and a choice of colour and they said “Well, this is the date we can give you” and they arrived. They were very, very efficient with very little mess, the staff were very good and very polite.

I am impressed by Stannah — I think they’re excellent. I don’t think you could have a better company to deal with.

Cyril and Marge’s Story

See the transcript

We purchased it for my husband, Cyril, due to him having a stroke about 9 years ago. We thought we might move but then it was such a lot of uprising.

The men came round from Stannah to check the hallway for measurement and it was impossible to leave it how it was because of Cyril’s legs, so they had to take the banister rail out and make a new one which they did and it’s absolutely brilliant. They were really caring.

Very clean work. Very clean workers cleaned up immaculately after. He knew the colour I was having ’cause I already got the new paper to go up and he picked me the chair to match, which I thought was lovely. Absolutely wonderful. I can’t fault them.

I do think it’s classy, definitely. If he’s sitting on there I would like to guide it up but he says “No. I can do it. I can do it”, guides himself. The chair comes in handy when Cyril gets up out of bed. He can take his time, get to the chair and come down on his own.

Before I had Stannah I was Cyril’s stairlift, I used to put my hands under his bottom to literally get him upstairs. It’s made a big, big difference to my life.
