Choosing a stairlift

The right stairlift can help you safely use the stairs and give you the energy to do the more enjoyable things in life. By removing the stairs as an obstacle, a stairlift means no longer worrying about popping downstairs for your glasses or nipping upstairs to the bathroom.

Choosing a stairlift is about understanding your needs and wants and selecting the most appropriate solution. Here at Stannah we have been doing this for over 40 years and in this time have helped over 600,000 customers select the perfect stairlift for their needs.

How we make our stairlifts safe

What makes a Stannah stairlift different?

Stannah stairlifts are built on the principles of reliable design, pleasing aesthetics, safety and long term value. From the osteoarthritis suit we use in our design team, to the wood trims we offer on our Starla product, through to our seatbelt sensors, we continually strive to develop innovative features that keep our stairlifts at the cutting edge and ensure exceptional quality.

Our stairlifts are manufactured right here in the UK, where we can make sure they are constructed to the highest standards. From our head office in Andover, Hampshire we export all over the world, including America, China and Japan.

We strongly believe that not all stairlifts should be the same. Just as every home and every person is different we offer a range of features across our products – such as powered swivels and automatic footrest folds – along with a wide selection of upholstery choices so our customers can get the perfect stairlift for them and their home.

Choosing a Stairlift FAQs

Is there a weight limit for a stairlift?

The weight limit for a stairlift tends to vary depending on a few different factors, such as:

  • Whether the rail is straight or curved
  • The bends and angles of the rail
  • The type of chair that is chosen

As a general guideline, the upper weight limit for a straight stairlift is approximately 160kg (25 stone), while the upper weight limit for a curved staircase stairlift is approximately 136kg (21 stone). However, it’s important to note that specific and accurate weight limits for stairlifts are dependent on a thorough site survey.

How much space do you need for a stairlift?

A stairlift can usually be fitted to even the narrowest of staircases without obstructing access to the stairs themselves. Stairlifts have foldaway foot rests, arm rests and seats to ensure optimal space saving.

The best way to check if you have enough room for a stairlift is by arranging a free, no-obligation home assessment with one of Stannah’s expert consultants. They can then take the necessary measurements of your staircase to check whether there is enough space and advise on the most appropriate stairlift for you.

How are stairlifts powered?

The carriage part of the stairlift that sits on the rails contains a motor which drives the unit electronically. The battery powered motor ensures a smooth, comfortable and quiet ride.

All Stannah stairlifts are powered by rechargeable batteries, meaning they will still work in the instance of a power cut. Depending on frequency of use, the battery should last between 3 to 5 years.
